Pond Fishing – ” The Beginning or How to Get started”
We should get started by setting up some definitions I consider a pond any small body of water that is generally considered to small to launch a boat with a substantial boatyard motor. A pond can be fished from a canoe, kayak, float tube, wading, or for most of these articles we will talk about bank fishing or fishing from the edge of the water. I was raised on a farm and had access to a dozen farm ponds that were used for irrigation and watering farm animals. Today the farm is going away and it is harder and harder to find farm ponds that are accessible for the new or older person wanting to take up fishing. However there are many places that are accessible fishing paradises. Subdivisions, golf courses, community parks, state parks, friends, co-workers, church members, all are likely resources for finding a place to fish. Most land owners are agreeable to letting someone fish if they are respectful of their property and develop a relationship of trust where they know you are not going to do something illegal, dangerous or hard the way their land or livestock. Trespassing and leaving trash on their land is a sure way to not get fishing permission and to get into legal trouble. There are people who have even placed ads on Craigslist for fishing per day you contact them and pay a small fee and you get to fish, I have had some of my best fishing days where I paid a dollar ($1.00) to fish. These pay to fish ponds are usually managed for fishing and have better than average chance of having a successful day because the wants you to come back. If you are new to fishing chances are you know someone who fishes and would be glad to teach you how or take you. I am going to discuss some of the ways you can learn and get started also. Fishing can be a very simple affair with a minimum of equipment to as complicated as you want to take your new hobby. We will start simple and develop more as we go along. Before we get started with the actual fishing a word on safety there are news stories yearly of people who drown, being careful is a must even if you are just fishing from the bank and especially if you have small children you are teaching how to fish. Basically fishing is pretty simple you need a place to go i.e. pond, and a way to remove those fish from that small enclosed place (the water) and bring them into ours to either eat or to just have fun and return them to the water.
